The Great Shake Out campaign and earthquake safety tips

CHEYENNE, Wyoming (Wyoming News Now) – Although most earthquakes occur in the western part of Wyoming, FEMA and the Wyoming State Geological Survey want everyone to have a strategy for staying safe.

In 2020, Wyoming experienced 1,483 earthquakes, and in April, Wyoming experienced 315 earthquakes. To date, the largest earthquake in Wyoming has reached a magnitude of 7.3 affecting Lake Hebgen with Yellowstone as the epicenter.

Wyoming is also located on the Intermountain Seismic Belt, an active fault zone. For this reason, FEMA has awarded funds to the Wyoming State Geological Survey for emergency tool kits and hazard preparedness.

This coincides with FEMA’s “Great Shake Out” campaign and safety drills. Together with emergency coordinators, this campaign focuses on educating the public, distributing emergency backpacks, power banks and headlamps.

They hope to increase the number of participants in Wyoming this year from the more than 8,000 participants in the program last year.
