KATMANDU, December 29: Interior Minister Bal Krishna Khand stressed the need to raise awareness of seismic security every day rather than raising awareness for a single day.

At the meeting of the 24th National Earthquake Safety Day Main Organizing Committee at the Home Office today, Minister Khand affirmed that it is everyone’s responsibility to protect the life of citizens against natural disasters.

Khand said, “Nepal is ranked 11th in terms of global earthquake risk. The previous Gorkha earthquake caused enormous loss of life and property. He alerted everyone. The post-earthquake reconstruction process is still ongoing.

The 24th National Earthquake Day will be celebrated on January 16, 2022 at Patan Durbar Square, Lalitpur. The government observed the National Earthquake Safety Day every year on the 2nd day of the Nepalese month of Magh in memory of the 1934 earthquake in order to publicize the methods of earthquake safety.

Minister Khand lobbied for compliance with the construction code of conduct introduced to minimize damage from the earthquake. “National Earthquake Safety Day should not be just a formality,” he said. “Instead,” added Minister Khand, “every citizen should learn to save themselves during an earthquake.”

Today’s meeting urged civil society, UN and non-governmental agencies, and communities to observe the Day in a grand way.

During the meeting, the Executive Director of the National Authority for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Anil Pokharel, presented the proposed and already approved programs that will be held on the National Earthquake Safety Day.

The Metropolitan City of Kathmandu will hold a commemorative assembly on the same day at Bhugol Park in New Road, Kathmandu.

The slogan for the 24th National Earthquake Safety Day is: “Earthquake Safety in Multiple Disasters, Protect Life and Property While Working Together”.
